Environmental Toxins

  • 2,000 new chemicals are introduced into commerce annually in the U.S., at a rate of seven new chemicals a day.   Examples – bis-phenol-A, phthalates, arsenic, perchlorate, nonylphenols, synthetic musks and other personal care product ingredients, nitrosodimethylamine, brominated flame retardants, nanoparticles, pharmaceutical wastes, and industrial chemical additives, stabilizers and adjuvants.
  • World Health Organization – exposure to air pollution causes cancer (lung and bladder)
  • The chemical industry complex is only 100 years old – 85,000 new manmade compounds have been created in just the last 50 years.  The US government does not require safety testing for chemicals.
  • Over 5,000 children’s products contain toxic chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive problems according to reports filed with the Washington State Department of Ecology.
  • Of chemicals commonly found in homes, 150 have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological abnormalities.
  • Babies are born with over 200+ chemicals in their blood today.
  • 25 human studies have linked fluoride with lowered IQ in children, including recent research from Harvard, and 100 animal studies linking it to brain damage.

Easy First Steps to Avoid Toxic Chemicals – From the Natural Resource Defense Council:

  1. Ditch antibacterial products with triclosanand triclocarban. These chemicals don’t get your hands any cleaner but can interfere with hormones and promote antibiotic resistant bugs.
  2. Clean with a damp mop and vacuum your home and couches regularly. Removing dust decreases your exposure to toxic chemicals added to furniture.
  3. Stop using flea collars with neurotoxins tetrachlorvinphosand propoxur.Safer flea and tick control options exist. See NRDC’s Green Paws’ product guide.
  4. Avoid lawn care products with toxic pesticides such as so-called “weed and feed” products with cancer causing 2,4-D.Pick weeds by hand and spot-apply only when needed.
  5. Don’t buy products that contain flame retardants.  These products off gas dangerous chemicals that are linked to low IQ, autism and obesity.  Foam padding used in furniture, changing pads for babies, upholstered chairs, car seats, tvs and cell phones. (Environmental Working Group)
  6. Buy a reverse osmosis system or a distiller to remove toxic chemicals (fluoride/chlorine) radioactive materials and pharmaceutical drug residues from the water.
  7. Avoid using plastic for water and food products. Don’t heat food in the microwave in a plastic container.

Avoid Genetically Modified foods – “The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has called on all physicians to prescribe diets without genetically modified (GM) foods to all patients.1 They called for a moratorium on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), long-term independent studies, and labeling, stating,”  “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food, including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. GM foods – Soy, Cottonseed oil , Canola, Corn, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian papaya, Alfalfa, Zucchini and some Yellow Squash.  50 countries ban or significantly restrict GMOS.

Electromagnetic pollution

Electromagnetic pollution is a global problem. EMFs are radiation that surrounds all electrical appliances and devices, power lines, and home wiring and is emitted by communications devices, including cell phones and radio, TV, and WiFi transmitters.

  1. Public health policy experts from the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and China, released a 650-page report citing more than 2,000 studies that detail the toxic effects of EMFs from all sources. Chronic exposure to even low-level radiation (like that from cell phones), the scientists concluded, can cause a variety of cancers, impair immunity, and contribute to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, heart disease, and many other ailments. “We now have a critical mass of evidence, and it gets stronger every day,” says David Carpenter, MD, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany.
  2. The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
  3. Dr. Klingheardt cites research where mold production of biotoxins increased six hundred times when exposed to electromagnetic fields. Yeast, infections, viruses and lyme disease respond the same way.  Pregnant mothers today are exposed to millions times more EMFs than mothers just 10 years ago.

Buy a gauss meter to check your levels and make sure everyone is sleeping in an EMF free zone. Don’t sleep with a cell phone by your bed or a baby monitor by your baby’s head.   Read “Dirty Electricity, electrification and the diseases of civilization.”
